The one sentence to say when your child gets it wrong

Almost everything a parent says after a wrong answer quietly ends the thinking. One question keeps it running, it takes four words, and it works on adults too.

Why correcting costs you something

When a child says twelve and the answer is fourteen, the fastest useful-feeling move is to say no, it’s fourteen. The transaction closes. Everyone moves on. And the one piece of information that would have helped — what they did to get twelve — is gone.

A wrong answer is a window into a method. Sometimes the method is nearly right and one step is off. Sometimes they have misunderstood the question entirely, which no amount of correcting the number will fix.

What the evidence actually supports

Two findings sit behind this, and they are not equally strong. The sturdier one is about retrieval and explanation: when a learner has to produce and articulate an answer rather than re-read or be told, retention improves substantially. Explaining your reasoning is a version of that.

The shakier one is praise. The famous studies suggesting that praising effort rather than intelligence transforms outcomes have not held up at full strength — the pooled effects of mindset interventions are small. Describing what a child did is still better than labelling who they are, but treat it as good manners, not a lever.

Neutral tone. Not a trap, not a hint. You are asking for the route, and you genuinely do not know it yet.

Listen to the end

Roughly half the time a child hears their own mistake while describing it and corrects themselves mid-sentence. That is the best possible outcome and it costs you nothing but silence.

Name the move, not the child

“You tried the smaller one first” is useful. “You’re so clever” is pleasant and teaches nothing about what to do next time.

What should I say when my child gets a question wrong?

Ask how they got there, in a genuinely curious tone, before saying anything about the answer. It gives you their method, it often lets them catch their own error, and it keeps a mistake from being an ending.

Should I praise effort instead of intelligence?

Prefer describing what they actually did — the specific move that worked. That is more useful than either kind of praise. Be sceptical of the claim that effort praise transforms achievement: pooled evidence for mindset interventions shows small effects and serious study-quality problems.

Doesn’t correcting a child help them learn?

Correction has its place, and children do need to know the right answer eventually. The order matters: ask first, correct second, and the correction lands on a method rather than a number.

What if they get frustrated?

Then stop. The question is meant to be light and occasional. A child who feels quizzed will stop showing you their thinking, which is the exact opposite of the goal.
